A  study of the Biblical basis of peer-ministry in the church with an exploration of the setup and the use of cell-group concept to promote Christian fellowship as well as church growth.  Introduces the principles, dynamics, and functions of small groups, and the organization, application, and content of small group ministry, as well as the training of small group leaders.

An exploration of the theological foundation, the skills and procedures of church planting; an introduction to and analysis of church planting theories; and a survey of church planting case studies.

MCS533           BUILDING A MISSION MINDED CHURCH        (2)
This course will overview the importance of missions from a Biblical and historical point of view.  It will also address many mission topics from the viewpoint of a local church including personal evangelism, local missions, working with missions boards, training your congregation for missions, the missionary and your congregation, short term missions and models of missionary churches.

MCS540           A BIBLICAL BASIS OF MISSIONS                        (2)
This course is a Bible overview from a missionary viewpoint.  It also applies many very practical mission principles for church and personal life and ministry.

A presentation of the Biblical foundation and practice of missions as well as an evaluation of the development of modern global missions.

A study of the basic principles and methodology of Anthropology with the aim of helping missionaries to be more effective in their cross-cultural ministries.

Be familiar with the history and development of modern missions.  Utilizing Chinese culture and characteristics of literature as a path to spread the Gospel.

A study of the history and development of modern missionary works in order to deepen the understanding of God’s work in today s world and the direction of contemporary missions. 

MCS547          BIBLICAL FAITH AND CHINESE CULTURAL HERITAGE (2)
A review and critique, from the Biblical perspective, of the Chinese cultural heritage, focusing especially on the philosophical and religious aspects. 

MCS550         CROSS-CULTURAL MINISTRY                                 (2)
A study of the issues in cross-cultural ministry from the missionary perspective in order to understand the needed equipping and techniques in cross-cultural missions.

A survey of the basic principles and strategies of church growth, and the application of these principles in cross cultural contexts. 

MCS552         STRATEGIES FOR CHURCH GROWTH                 (2)
An in-depth study of the principles and strategies for church growth, evaluating various church growth strategy models.

MCS554         A CHINESE APPROACH TO MISSIONS                   (2)
This course does not only address missions directed to Chinese but it also emphasizes the involvement of Chinese in missions through church and personal missions activity.  After an overview of Chinese missions history this course addresses Chinese largest and most influential religions including Buddhism, Taoism, Islam and ancestor worship.  

MCS556        SPIRITUAL WARFARE FOR CHINESE MISSIONS  (2)
This class will look at the Biblical teaching on Spiritual warfare and the place it plays in the life of the believer.  We will discuss the place of prayer, deliverance and healing from a spiritual warfare slant.  Importance will also be placed on strategies, authority and principles of spiritual warfare.

A study of growth theories in relation to the minister’s physical, psychological, and spiritual health, with the aim of helping him/her to clear up mental hindrances of realizing his/her potential and thus to build a healthy family and productive ministerial life. Provides an overview of the growth and development of Christian churches from the Seventeenth Century through the Twentieth Century with the major attention given to the history of Christianity in Asia, which includes major missionary enterprises by the Roman Catholics and Protestants and the major growth of non-Western Christian churches.

A study on the history of Asian American church in order to project the future growth of Asian American churches.

CES534-A       SMALL GROUP DYNAMICS                                                           (3)
Topics includes communication, group dynamics, building community and insights on ministry and leadership; as well as conflict management and healthy group development.

MCS536-A      THE PASSION OF CHRIST FOR ALL NATIONS                         (3)
Studies God’s love for the Nations through the various centuries of Christian History and how the gospel has spread through many nations.  Discussion on the cultural issues and strategic ideas to take the gospel to all the world.  This course will help the students both understand God’s love for the world and to develop some wa ys to mobilizing the congregation to fulfill the Great Commission.

MCS537-A       LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY                                                     (3)
Leaders today must know and understand the complexities that face churches and be adequately prepared.  This course will look at some crucial issues in the Asian American and multi-ethnic church and help the students to develop some strategies for ministry in a pluralistic setting.

PTS543-A       PARENTS, FAMILY MINISTRY AND WORSHIP IN ASIAN AMERICAN SETTING     (3)
This class will provide theological, cultural, and practical reflections on family dynamics and on worship in Asian American settings, with a particular emphasis on the role of culture.  We will study effective methods of teaching children, youth, and adults in a family ministry setting, and explore biblical boundaries and freedoms for contextualizing worship.

PTS544-A       PASTORAL MINISTRY IN ASIAN AMERICAN SETTING              (3)
Focuses on the particular needs and opportunities of Asian American ministry setting to provide theological and practical reflections on pastoral ministry including:  leadership, worship planning, visitation, pastoral care and counseling, weddings and funerals, ministerial ethics, balancing life and ministry, etc.

PTS545-A      ASIAN AMERICAN EVANGELISM, MINISTRY, AND WORSHIP   (3)
Provides theological, and practical reflections on evangelism, ministry, and worship in Asian American settings, with a particular emphasis on the role of culture.  Topics include: Biblical foundations for ministry and worship, cultural and generational considerations, cross-cultural communication, weddings and funerals, ministry fiancés, and balancing life and ministry.

PTS547-A     ASIAN AMERICAN PASTORAL LEADERSHIP AND PASTORAL THEOLOGIES (3)
Examines the practice of contemporary Asian American pastoral leadership.  The main objective of the course is, therefore, to ground Asian American pastoral leadership practice by constructing Asian American pastoral theologies that coalesce Asian American narratives with questions derived from Asian American church and ethnicities.

PTS548-A     ASIAN AMERICAN PASTORAL LEADERSHIP FROM THE INSIDE OUT  (3)
Many pastoral leaders are confronted with conflict within and without due to generational and worldview clashes in the process of acculturation.  Since leadership flows out of who you are, this course focuses on equipping pastoral leaders with  leadership tools from the inside out so that the leaders can attend to their own interior landscapes before engaging in reconciling work within self, family, church, and the world. 

TSS552-A      POSTMODERNISM AND THE CHRISTIAN FAITH                            (3)
A study of how post-modern philosophy affects the Christian faith including understanding the philosophical background of post-modernism and grasping the cultural and ministerial trends in the
postmodern era.
CES558-A     CREATIVE TEACHING METHODS IN ENGLISH SPEAKING MINISTRIES  (3)
This is a practical class designed to help students become a more effective teacher in the local church.  Topics include: Sunday school teaching, small groups, story-telling, and large group talks.  The class looks at the needs of different age groups and finds creative ways to teach them successfully.  Special emphasis will be placed on developing each participant’s unique teaching style. 

CES564-A     ASIAN AMERICAN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION                                       (3)
Explores the cultural, social, historical, and theological experiences of Asian American churches in order to identify some emerging issues.  Compares non-Asian ethnic groups’ experiences and ministry concerns in order for the students to learn the dynamics of different ethnic groups’ attitudes, values, and beliefs.

PTS570-A      WORSHIP IN ASIAN AMERCIAN SETTING                                           (3)
Provides both a general introduction to Christian worship and a specific consideration of worship in Asian American setting.  Also covers Biblical foundations, cultural considerations, worship principles, and practical ideas for cultivation worship in Asian American settings.

PTS572-A       ASIAN AMERICAN MINISTRY I                                                               (3)
From the history and church development of Asian people groups to explore how to grow the Asian American ministry.  Also to prepare the first generation of ministers to face the second generation ministry.

PTS573-A       ASIAN AMERICAN MINISTRY II                                                              (3)
From the postmodernism point of view to study the second generation ministry in Asian American churches, also to explore in-depth how to build an effective youth ministry in church.

PTS577-A       DYNAMICS OF SPIRITUAL FORMATION                                             (3)
Outlines the basic principles and key components of spiritual formation while highlighting the vital aspects of the Word, the Spirit, and the People of God.  Explores the various practical dynamics involved in spiritual formation such as the exercise of certain spiritual disciplines and key soul-care ministries.


G.  Field Education

Two months of full-time practical training of pastoral duties in local church or internship in para-church organization during the summer break.

Internship according to individual student’s need, guided by instructor aiming to strengthen ministry experiences. (This course can be counted toward degree credits, with the maximum of 2 credit units for M. Div. program, and the maximum of 1 credit unit for M.A.C.S. program.)
